Demonstrations, Experiments, and Software Testing

Michael Bolton - Lead Consultant at DevelopSense
Kalyana Rao Konda - President at Cigniti Technologies

What's the webinar all about?

What's the difference between a demonstration and an experiment? Sounds like philosopher-talk, doesn't it? So why should that difference matter to managers, developers, teams, and... testers?

Alas, in software development, we often call both demonstrations and experiments by the same name: "tests".

In this presentation, Michael Bolton explains the difference, and how scientists (and, yes, philosophers of science) came to differentiate between demonstration and experiment. Of the two, one is designed to show us something that we already know; the other is intended to help us learn things we want or need to know. The difference is crucial because the purpose of testing must not be merely to show that the product can work. We test to learn about the product so that we can understand it better, and address problems before it's too late.

In the second half of the presentation, Kalyan shares insights on how Cigniti is assisting leading enterprises globally including the Fortune 500 in their Software Testing & Quality Engineering initiatives and accelerating their digital transformation.

Shift Left or Squish Right: Getting Time to Test

James Bach - CEO and Principal Consultant - Satisfice, Inc., A pioneer of Rapid, Exploratory, and Agile Testing.
Kalyana Rao Konda - President, North America at Cigniti Technologies

Shift Left testing recommends reversing the testing approach and involving system/software testing earlier in the lifecycle. Practically, it means moving the testing approach on the left end on the project timeline.

However, "programmers generally won’t stop coding to spend days developing and performing deep testing. What they mean by “testing” is relatively simple output checking. Deep testing may never happen in a shift-left regime, which then forces that work to the right — into the world of production and users. I call that “squish left and right," which means that there is pressure not to allow testers to perform a competent test process. How do we resist this pressure? How do we sell testing?", asks James Bach.

Key Takeaways:

  • How to pitch Testing and its timing to key stakeholders.
  • The impact of testing at various stages of a digital transformation.
  • Your customers/users and the brand from technical issues.

Integrating Automated Testing Into DevOps and Agile

Integrating Automated Testing Into DevOps and Agile

Vibhu Taneja, Director - Head of Transformation, Quality Engineering & Environments at Deutsche Bank

Automation facilitates the ‘test early, test often, test everywhere’ strategy in DevOps & Agile enterprises
Transformation of SDLCs without the transformation of testing approach is just a futile attempt at optimization. Testing used to be an afterthought, a last-minute protocol in legacy SDLCs. Agile and DevOps put testing on forefront, bringing in the ‘shift-left’ mindset. But manual testing takes away the essence of these modern methodologies, thus, making testing an inhibitor rather than a facilitator in delivering quality products at speed. Automated testing upholds efficiency of Agile sprints and empower collaboration in DevOps teams. As enterprises are now adopting an ‘Agile+DevOps’ approach for software development, automated testing becomes the key to a successful and timely deployment. Register for the webinar and join the discussion with Vibhu Taneja and Nanda Padmaraju.

Key Takeaways:

Manual testing is not feasible for a continuous testing strategy. To test everywhere and to test efficiently, automated testing is required in DevOps & Agile enterprises.
With extensive experience in handling complex transformational multi-year programs and business critical transformation projects, Vibhu Taneja and Nanda Padmaraju will help you understand, discover, know, and learn how to integrate test automation into Agile & DevOps.
